Could The Originals, spin-off Supernatural’s Wayward Sisters both happen?
Both concepts carry with them many strengths. For starters, they are based on established, successful properties. Also, The CW could be ordering more new series than usual. They are adding a couple new hours to Sunday nights and it’s already pretty clear that they are dropping Life Sentence and Valor from the schedule. It’s possible that they could drop more depending on what they want to do with The 100 or iZombie — with The Originals ending, you can add that show to the list as well.
Yet, even with all of this in mind we’ve seen many networks look at these spin-offs as an either/or situation and we’re not entirely sure that it is.
With the Originals spin-off, for example, why couldn’t you make this a 13-episode show like the past two seasons of the series proper? While we know that waiting until the spring to see new episodes can be frustrating, this format has really worked for The Originals and we think that it’s helped the ratings to get something that is, in the end, a little bit more contained. With Wayward Sisters, meanwhile, we’d consider either airing it and the flagship series on the same night (at least for thirteen episodes), or bring this show on as an awesome summer series to help ease the wait between Supernatural seasons. We’re still somewhat shocked that The CW doesn’t take better advantage of the summer since networks like Freeform and Syfy are doing such a good job there. Wayward Sisters could kill in the summer and be a hit there for many years to come — it’d appeal to Supernatural fans but could probably find new fans in the process looking for something good to watch.
Does The CW have other programming that they are consider for the schedule? Sure, but for us personally we’d rather have two spin-offs of great shows that a reboot of Charmed that some of the original cast and crew doesn’t seem to be altogether happy with.
