Ratings: How did Blindspot, Agents of SHIELD help renewal odds?
For SHIELD, unfortunately, the current ratings are what they’ve been for most of the spring — not great. Think in terms of a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic. While this wasn’t intended to be the final season we know the upcoming season finale (entitled “The End”) is written in a way that it could function as a series-ender if need be. That’s smart since it’s too early to tell what ABC’s final decision will be here. Were it not for the Marvel connection, we’d probably say it’s likely to get canceled; yet, that corporate synergy has saved it once before and it could very well save it again.
For Blindspot, meanwhile, the NBC series drew a 0.5 rating in the demo. While that is the same as the rating for the past couple of weeks, that’s still hardly the sort of number that you want to celebrate in jubilation. It’s facing an uphill battle mostly because it’s the lowest-rated Monday – Friday drama that NBC has on the air right now. Taken was already taken away and with that, Blindspot stands out. Yet, it also airs on a night in Fridays that is very difficult for any show. That’s especially true since it’s been stuck against another show in MacGyver for the entirety of the season that already has its own enormous audience. Sometimes, it’s really hard to compete against an established show on a night when there is a pretty limited number of programs on the air in the first place.
