Supergirl season 3: The precarious position of Lena Luthor

Lena Luthor

On Monday night’s Supergirl season 3 episode, we come into it with a certain degree of nervousness regarding Lena Luthor. In the closing minutes last week, it was revealed that she seems to have Samantha Arias held in a secret L Corp chamber. That’s where, presumably, she could be doing research on her in order to figure out what is really going on here.

As the promo below shows, Lena is doing what she can to make it clear to Sam as to what is going on with her — we never hear the word “Reign” spoken, but it may not be altogether hard in order to put two and two together here. Samantha knowing that she is actually Reign is valuable from the vantage point alone of seeing her see if there is a way to stop that. Can she find herself a place to be where, if she transforms, she doesn’t hurt anyone? Maybe that is the endgame for this season — rather than killing Reign, maybe there is a way instead to simply contain her.

In a sense, maybe this is what Lena and Sam are building towards … but we also worry in the process of this that Lena is going to lose the trust of much of the rest of the team. They don’t know what she’s up to or that Sam is with her. The longer that she goes without trusting her, the more troublesome that could be for her. When you’ve got the last name “Luther,” you really have to be prepared for the fact that there are going to be a lot of different people who are not altogether inclined to give you the benefit of the doubt if you do something that is untrustworthy. Keeping a secret from your friends/colleagues certainly will build distrust. For Lena, she may be doing what needs to be done. For everyone else, though, she could be crossing a line that she can’t uncross no matter what some of the attentions are.

For the time being, we’ll have some hope that Lena, despite her secret treatments of Sam, will figure out a way to stay on Supergirl’s good side. Getting alongside Kara Danvers is a slightly different story; for example, Supergirl may know something about Lena that Kara isn’t privy to figure out.

Expect a lot of drama — we’ll just have to see if there is a way for Lena to get on the other side of it.
