Bosch season 4 episode 8 review: What is Gabriella Lincoln up to?

Bosch

We are coming up on the end of Bosch season 4 and even though they have Frank in custody for Elias’ murder Bosch is not convinced that they have the right man (and neither are we!). All of the evidence is mounting against Frank, but we still go back to the same issue on it: Why was Frank going to admit to torturing Michael Harris and not the murder of Elias? Also we know that Elias had a video of the torture, but who gave it to him and why? Let’s see what’s in store for us.

The major storyline running through this episode began with Snyder being the last person listed to take out the evidence box linked to Frank’s case. When he confronts her about it she denies it telling him that someone forged her name and to check the thumb print and the surveillance footage of the evidence room. So who took the bullet from evidence? After watching the surveillance footage he learns that it was Synder’s partner (Gabriella Lincoln) that signed her name. Was she looking to swap out the bullets so it would match Frank’s gun? Bosch isn’t sure if she killed Elias or she knows who did, but someone swapped the bullets at the coroners office to make it look like Frank did the deed. It could’ve been a brilliant frame job if Bosch didn’t pull it apart – Frank is not the person who shot Elias, but what we want to know now is what is Gabriella’s connection to all of this?

Snyder does some digging into Lincoln and learns that she made two major deposits to her child’s bank account around the time that Elias received settlements against two other cops (interestingly named Prentiss and Beckett which are two of our favorite detective names from Criminal Minds and Castle). The thinking is that Gabriella was feeding Elias information in cases as a way for him to take a settlement and squash the cases before going to trial and in return she would get a piece of the cash pie. Bosch is now starting to think that it was Lincoln who found the hidden camera at the wrecking yard and gave it to Elias, but when Elias decided to take the case to trial she panicked and may have murdered him.

Once everyone is up to speed on the possible shady dealings with Lincoln the team sets up a pretty brilliant scenario in which Bosch is able to question her without her realizing that she’s getting questioned at all. They set it up so that she thought her input was going to be important in questioning another cop who may have been involved and when Bosch is alone with her he is able to start finessing the conversation into details about the missing camera and how she was the person recorded in the case file as responsible for the cameras. As the interrogation goes on, she figures out that she is the one that is the real suspect and that they think she killed Elias. She tells them that she didn’t sell anything to Elias and that this is much bigger than they think saying that if they want her to talk then they need to bring in the DA. Seeing Bosch work over Gabriella was a lot of fun to watch play out.

CarterMatt Verdict

The Elias case is getting really interesting now and it feels like there are a lot of hands in this pie. While the Mayor wants this to look like one bad apple in the police force, this is starting to feel very webbed with a lot of different moving parts. Only two episodes left to go, but it feels like there is so much more story left to tell. How are they going to wrap this up in such a short time? We are excited to find out.
