Grey’s Anatomy season 14 episode 19 is airing right around the corner on ABC Thursday night, and at the center of this one is something extremely topical: ICE. For quite some time there has been a lengthy discussion going on in America regarding immigration; signs point at present to this also having a pretty surprising role in the series itself.
In the sneak peek that CarterMatt has for you below, you can get a pretty good idea as to precisely what we are dealing with here. The focal point of this installment is an agent arriving to the hospital in hopes of speaking to one of the surgical interns. It’s not specified which one in the preview, and but we will say this, though: Given that Jeanine Mason has booked another project in the planned reboot of Roswell over on The CW, Sam could be a top candidate if the writers are looking for ways to write that character off the show. This would create some interesting reverberations for some other characters including DeLuca, who is currently bouncing around from one place to the next. She is one of the only sources at the moment of stability for him.
One of the surprising ways in which the sneak peek plays this story is that they are one of the few shows out there who doesn’t try to just overtly play the ICE agent as some sort of brute who comes barging into a given locale looking to ensure that they get the person that they want in handcuffs. They are trying a different strategy here — they try to come across as friendly and courteous to Miranda and Meredith, potentially to show a different side and earn their cooperation. As for whether or not this agent is actually going to get it, that is something else entirely. Consider this, though: Do you think that Bailey is going to be all that willing to lose one of her surgeons, especially if it is because of a political issue like DACA that takes them away from the hospital? That just doesn’t feel altogether likely. We expect this to be an interesting, emotional battle where doing what is right does not necessarily correspond with obeying the letter of the law. Sometimes, debates are a little more nuanced than just following the rules.
We’ll be back Thursday night after the episode, entitled “Beautiful Dreamer” (a fitting title given the story), with more coverage, but until then we will continue to bring you more scoop on the show.
