Outlander’s DVD success already justifies season 5, 6 renewals further

Just in case Starz and Sony needed another reason to get an Outlander season 5 and season 6 rolling, we do think the proof is in the pudding. In this case, said pudding is the strong DVD sales we’re seeing already for the season 3 DVD / Blu-Rays on Amazon.

As of this writing (which is around 3:20 p.m. PT time on April 10), both versions of the collection are in the top ten of the Amazon best-seller list for sales of movies/TV shows. The only things that are ranking consistently above it are new release movie The Greatest Showman (which became a surprise smash hit at the box office over the holidays) and then also Star Wars Episode XIII: The Last Jedi, which really doesn’t need much of an explanation at all.

We’ve long said that when it comes to television, networks are always going to lean most towards whatever benefits their bottom line as well as their purse-strings. At the moment, it’s certainly pretty clear that Sony is cashing in big with the sales of this collection. It’s one thing for people to watch a television series, but it’s another thing altogether to convince them to go spend roughly thirty dollars in order to purchase a DVD’s of it. High sales of TV seasons are not extremely common in 2018, mostly because of streaming services and premium networks. For example, viewers who have Starz can go and watch online any episode of Outlander that they want. The merit of picking up the season is getting something more, including bonus features and deleted scenes that further enrich the story. Maybe there is also an appeal of being able to pop in the episodes without needing to connect to the internet. Not everyone out there, after all, has an extremely fast connection.

While we don’t exactly think that studio executives thought before that Outlander fans were anything other than devoted, the sales of the new season prove it. Ordering more seasons means in turn more sales, more merchandise, and more money. As a viewer it’s more about getting a chance to see a beautiful love story with ebbs and flows, but it’s understandable what language studios often choose to speak in.

For the sake of some added context, and a reminder of just how rare it is for there to be other DVDs for TV shows on the best-sellers list, there is only one other TV show in the top 50 as of this writing: The first season of Westworld, currently sitting at #44. Meanwhile, Outlander season 3 is at #5.
