Will Samantha Cage ever return to MacGyver?

Isabel Lucas leaving

Is Isabel Lucas leaving MacGyver for good? It’s a question that has been long asked at CarterMatt, and it does feel as though we now have a possible answer.

According to TVLine, there are no plans for Lucas to return as Samantha Cage following her departure back to Australia earlier this season. The last time that Cage was seen on the show, it was in the midst of her recovery after being shot by Murdoc. It appeared at the time that we were going to see her again and that she was heading home simply to recover. Now, it seems as though this stay will be permanent.

Lucas has remained on press releases throughout much of season 2 as a regular, though in recent weeks there have not been many updates as to her condition. Removing her from the equation is somewhat of a surprise, but the remainder of the MacGyver ensemble functions very well and has been able to push the story forward in the time in which she is gone. The character had potential, but sometimes changes just happen and you move forward from there. Given that there is no word as to why the character is not returning, it doesn’t seem particularly fair as to speculate.

There are a few more episodes to go this season on MacGyver and as this story progresses signs point to there being a few more surprises to go along with that. After all, there’s potential to meet Mac’s dad by the finale and also get a better understanding of the history that exits between Matty and Mac’s family. The finale is poised to air next month and there is no official word as of yet as to whether or not there will be a season 3, but we remain hopeful that there will be an announcement soon.

Is it possible that the third season introduces someone new?

Possibly, if for no other reason than that this is a show with a fairly small cast of just five main people — especially when you consider that it ran for 23 episodes this season. It makes sense to add someone else to the equation to balance out the workload a little bit more. That’s one of the benefits for a show like Hawaii Five-0, which features significantly more regulars who predominantly head out into the field. Then, you can add to that a number of other characters who are important in other capacities. That enables the 25 episode order to be possible without burning everyone out.
