As we brace ourselves for House of the Dragon season 3 episode 5, it feels like a lot could turn on a dime thanks to one simple twist. By that, we mean simply the fact that Helaena is pregnant and she and Alicent both have to find a way to contend with that.

Do we wish the show’s timeline would be a little bit clearer? Sure, as it feels like it has been longer since Aegon’s departure from King’s Landing than it actually is. However, all of this does feel like the show laying a measure of groundwork towards introducing Maelor into the story — a thread that makes some sense, given that this child existed in Fire & Blood far earlier on in the timeline.

Speaking recently to IGN, showrunner Ryan Condal had the following to say about the story we are getting with Helaena — and not just that, but where it may be going (without confirming 100% that Maelor is coming):

“Helaena being pregnant is a major complication for her given the fact that she’s literally in Rhaenyra’s shadow and her captive. And if that child is a boy, it’s going to be very problematic for both Rhaenyra, and for her, and for Alicent … So it felt like a way to keep alive certain threads in the book in a way that sort of suited the plot, I think, and the story that we’re telling here in our version, our adaptation of The Dance of the Dragons.”

We do tend to think that Rhaenyra, should she ever find out about the pregnancy, would try her best to be merciful within reason. However, she would still know that this is a problem. The bigger concern may be what Daemon or someone else would do.
