Legends of Tomorrow season 3 finale: Who died in opening minutes?
At the start of the episode, Rip Hunter devised a plan in which to temporarily stop Mallus, at least for long enough to ensure that the Legends were going to be able to escape him and go somewhere else in time. Unfortunately, in doing so he gave his life in the process. Rip was the original Legend in that he brought the whole team together — even though he wasn’t on the team all that much during the third season, he was still a very important person to the overall story.
What Legends of Tomorrow did really well within this episode is that they gave us a real great moment to honor Rip through some reflections of his life — especially the story of the first season with his wife and son. It was something that was largely abandoned in recent seasons, mostly because of his diminished role and the show’s determinations as to how to handle the character. Darvill is fantastic in this role (just as he always is), but losing him at this point served as the catalyst for everything to come in the hour. The big regret we have is that we wish there were some more opportunities to see this character over the course of this season, so much so that we didn’t even consider the possibility that Rip could die when speculating about possible season 3 finale departures. As for whether or not we foresee Darvill being able to come back as Rip Hunter in the future, there is still an opportunity for that just based on the sort of series this is. Yet, it’s also important for the show to wait a while before doing so. Even if this is a series where time, life, and death can be easily manipulated, it does remain important for death to mean something. Sad as it may be, it could be time for Rip to strut off into the sunset.
