Grey’s Anatomy season 14: How the hero’s journey for Meredith Grey continues

Meredith Grey

For CarterMatt’s latest edition of our month-long TV Heroes series, we’re putting the focus entirely on someone who absolutely knows a thing or two about being a hero: Ellen Pompeo’s Grey’s Anatomy character of Meredith Grey. This is someone who routinely saves lives in her professional life, but her heroism isn’t just limited to when she is treating patients. This is someone who is a caring sister and a good friend, and someone who despite her obstacles is worthy of commendation in just about everything that she does.

Let’s start here with some of what Meredith does within the hospital — this is enough to earn her a prestigious Harper Avery Award! Despite having to work at times under the shadow of her famous mother Ellis, she has found a way to, time and time again, practice medicine in a way that few others can. She is devoted to her work, both in terms of helping patients with routine issues while also still trying to push the envelope for what medicine can be. That’s evidenced precisely in what we’ve had a chance to see her do with the surgical contest storyline virtually all season long. It represents her pushing the envelope, and for Meredith this is really not all that much about her trying to get the glory. We’ve already seen that she doesn’t care all that much about the attention — she recognizes it as a result of some of her research, but it’s hardly a driving force. Instead, it’s about doing a job to really help patients and to try and make the world better. It’s heroism, but it’s also empathy. She’s lost many people she loves, whether it be her sister Lexie or her husband Derek. She realizes what some of this pain is like. There are times in which nothing can be done, but clearly Meredith is out to reduce those occasions as much as possible.

Does Meredith make mistakes at the hospital? Sure, but she also shows the right way to bounce back — pushing forward and not letting them overwhelm you and that is one of the aspects of her character that is so inspiring to viewers everywhere. The same can be said for in her personal life, where she tries to be understanding, but often has to overcome some self-inflicted obstacles. Meredith does at times make things harder on herself, which is somewhat understandable given how hard it must be to think clearly when you’re overwhelmed by so many forces acting against you in between the job, dealing with the everyday routine of life, and then also living with family and then also raising kids. She does still try to be the best parent and sister possible; her determination in those spaces are proof that any issue can be overcome and that family works together when the going gets tough.

The biggest reason that Meredith is one of TV’s greatest heroes is just how much she would balk at the assertion of it. She’s someone who happens to go about an extraordinary life, unaware of the extraordinary inspiration that she brings to everyone in turn. This is a character who has inspired people to enter medical school and produce long-term careers in the field; yet, if Meredith the character were to hear that, she may crack a smile, say thanks, and return to the work that she cares about so deeply.
