Outlander season 5: Why it’s not too early to think about plans

Outlander season 4

In some ways, we more than understand that it’s ridiculous to start our mental wheels turning about Outlander season 5. After all, Starz has yet to officially even order this latest batch of episodes! Season 4 is still filming and while we do think a renewal needs to happen this summer if production is going to follow the same schedule, there doesn’t need to be a renewal in order for some of the powers-that-be to start doing some of their planning.

There are many different examples of this out there even from the past year or so. For example, the writers of Netflix’s Santa Clarita Diet are already preparing season 3 episodes even though the series has not been picked up yet. Meanwhile, shows like NCIS: New Orleans and Criminal Minds over on CBS are setting production schedules in the event that they are coming back. Typically, these sort of moves are a signal of great confidence.

As of right now, there hasn’t been too much in the way of public announcements on season 5 work, though that could change in the coming months if the writers begin work without an official renewal. It could also change if there are some castings that need to be made long in advance — in May 2017, weeks before the conclusion of season 3 filming, the show officially “cast” two dogs to play Rollo, with the likely reason for that being that they needed some time in which to properly train the animals to be ready for the show. While it’s doubtful that a human casting will come that early, the producers could at least start to get someone in mind if they really want.

The most important early order of business for season 5 though, will be securing some locations for filming. Some of this needs to be done long in advance given that there’s often competition for locations, you need to get the proper permits, and often there are many time-consuming steps that have to be done. It also just presents you with some different options to choose from down the road depending on the direction of the scripts. Most of this work is done quietly, but some of this of course has to be done long before filming can begin. If Outlander continues to move within the same schedule, signs point to season 5 starting to film in October.

The reason we write with such confidence about an upcoming season is simply because there is no reason to not have confidence. The series’ success speaks for itself and everyone from the network to Ronald D. Moore has shown enormous confidence in the long-term future of Outlander on TV.
