Outlander notes: Laura Donnelly’s big win, Jenny speculation

Laura Donnelly

There is some very-good news worth passing along today in the realm of Outlander stars getting some significant awards recognition under their belt! While at the Olivier Awards, it was confirmed that Laura Donnelly (who plays Jenny Fraser Murray on the Starz series) was the recipient of the Best Actress award for her work in The Ferryman.

Theater is one of the ultimate challenges for an actor, since it requires the utmost concentration and the ability to really isolate yourself from the audience and be thrown into your own unique world. With that in mind, Donnelly deserves all of the praise in the world for this honor!

Hopefully, in winning this award there are two things that come for her: Even more opportunities to do great stage work and in turn, even more TV gigs. We do want to continue to see her playing Jenny for however long she can.

What could be coming up for Jenny on Outlander season 4?

While her specific role in the Starz series remains unclear, Donnelly’s character is at one point essential in the novel in which it is based in Drums of Autumn. Over the course of that novel, Jenny ends up helping to care for Brianna after her arrival in the past. She stays at Lallybroch for a time and, in the process of that, learns a lot more about her father and also her family history. Jenny is happy to be able to see Jamie’s daughter, and this is a very nice little part of the journey before she makes the trip over to America. That is, of course, when the big meeting is going to take place between Brianna and Jamie.

What we mostly want to see from Jenny, no matter however long she is a part of the show, is for her to display more of her feisty personality and be almost a mentor in some ways to Brianna in the short period of time the characters spend together (provided of course that it happens.) She’s one of the series’ best supporting characters — passionate, devoted, and also capable of some great humor. There’s a lot of good content that could be packed into a relatively short period of time with her.
