Legends of Tomorrow season 4: What’s next for Avalance?
Through most of season 3, we’ve had the opportunity to see their love story play out in a way that is romantic, but also fun and exhilarating. There have been obstacles, but they’ve been able to overcome some of them. Hopefully the final hurdles are going to be cleared in the season 3 finale, given that we just left off at a point in which Sara confessed her love for Ava. Unfortunately, Ava is still struggling with the new-found knowledge of her existence, and is having a hard time feeling anything other than despair.
The good news is that with Jes Macallan’s promotion to series regular for the fourth season, it’s pretty clear that this character is not going anywhere and she will have some time to work through what she’s learned about herself.. The two are going to have their back-and-forth mostly because they’re not always going to be on the same page, but that’s part of what makes their relationship stand out from the pack. It doesn’t appear as though the writers are putting Ava on the Waverider anytime soon — she’s going to continue to lead the Time Bureau, which seems like it’s going to be almost immediately an engine for conflict. There are always going to be differences of strategy and opinion between this organization and the Legends and Sara and Ava are going to have to navigate those as they move forward together.
In explaining what the dynamic could be like via TV Guide, executive producer Phil Klemmer had the following to say:
“They’re obviously two very complicated women and their functions on the show only become more complicated next season … It’s like two CEOs being married to each other. It’s not a simple life for the two of them.”
The hope here is that these two characters may at least have some sort of opportunity for peace coming up given that we’re almost to the zenith of the battle with Mallus. Depending on what sort of cliffhanger Klemmer and the writers could up with, there could be a really good chance that the fourth season begins after the two have had a little bit of time to live a normal existence — or at least as normal as characters like Sara and Ava could possibly have.
