Saturday Night Live expectations for Chadwick Boseman, Cardi B
Part of the reason for this confusion right now simply seems to stem from the fact that Boseman himself is new to SNL, and he’s coming into an environment that can be intimidating to any host — even if it’s a host that’s known for being Black Panther. We do anticipate there being at least one sketch related to the Marvel movie, even if the trouble there comes in that there already was one of those back when Sterling K. Brown was the host for the show earlier this year. This is an interesting spot for Black Panther promotion in general: The movie’s been out for a little while now and pretty much everyone on the planet loves it, but this feels almost as much like a promotion for Avengers: Infinity War as it does the original movie Chadwick was in.
Beyond just the Marvel movie, it’s hard to see Boseman dipping too much into some of his other roles here, largely because he is best known for playing some historical figures. It’s hard to skewer people like Jackie Robinson or James Brown — why would you even want to?
As for Cardi B, we’re not someone who listens to a lot of her music, but she seems excited and eager to be there, which in some cases is enough to make us think that she will do a fairly good job with her set and maybe appear in a sketch or two.
Beyond just these new faces, maybe you get an appearance from Alec Baldwin as Donald Trump. The problem that comes with this impression at this point is that you used to be able to predict when he was going to turn up based on the amount of news in a week. Yet, it now feels as though there is something big coming from the Administration almost every day that it is hard to keep track of all of it through the noise.
