Saturday Night Live: John Mulaney hosting April 14 show; Jack White performing

John Mulaney

Even though John Mulaney never was technically a cast member on Saturday Night Livehe did develop a reputation for being one of the series’ best writers during his stint. Now, fresh off of his brief cameo as Stefon’s lawyer during the Bill Hader episode earlier this month, he is getting a separate hosting gig in his own right.

Today, NBC confirmed that Mulaney is going to be hosting the April 14 edition of SNL and not only that, but he will be joined by musical guest Jack White. This is a chance for Mulaney to flex his comedic muscles in a way that he never really got a chance to do on the show itself and we also wonder if we could end up seeing the return of some of the sketches that he wrote previously during his stint on the show.

This is far from the first time that a former SNL writer has come back and hosted the show without ever being a cast member. One of the best recent examples of this happening recently comes via Larry David. We do think that this will be a very funny installment just because of the fact that you’ve got someone the cast is already super-familiar with and also someone that will probably deliver a great bit of standup comedy in the opening. This follows up Tiffany Haddish and Kumail Nanjiani, two comedians who delivered outstanding monologues a little bit earlier this season.

Mulaney is going to be the second host announced who is taking part in SNL coming up this season. As previously reported, Chadwick Boseman of Black Panther is going to be hosting the upcoming April 7 episode of the series while Cardi B serves as the musical guest. It’s possible that these will be the only shows in April given that SNL likes to save a few shows for the final run in May.
