Chicago Fire season 6 episode 17 review: Otis’ new gig; Severide’s surprise

Chicago Fire season 6 episode 17

Tonight, Chicago Fire season 6 episode 17 delivered a pretty startling episode themed around a dramatic pool rescue. Yet, by the end of the episode, this wasn’t really the thing that most people will be talking about.

Instead, it was the difficult state of the marriage between Dawson and Casey. Earlier this year she made the decision to keep Casey in the dark for a while. Tonight, some of her history with Cordova started to come out and that, understandably, started to get him upset. Casey has a lot to suddenly worry about, and that’s not good for any relationship. Dawson did her best to assure him that it won’t happen again but is that going to be enough?

Elsewhere within this episode, Otis took it upon himself to try and figure out how he was going to recover from his injury and decided, with that in mind, to take Boden up on his offer to join the bullpen. Following that, he found himself in a position where he almost cost 51 a ton of money … almost. Instead, what really happened was that he fell victim to scammers who were really just out to take advantage of him — through his own investigating, he got answers and offered to keep helping around the firehouse in the process. (Who else choked up tonight when they saw Connie?)

As for things that we did not see coming in a million years, the big winner (or is it really a winner?) there is Severide’s parents deciding all of a sudden that they wanted to be back together. Kelly’s mom had just arrived in town and he was doing whatever he could in order to help her. Then, he was blindsided with this and that can’t be great news for him given all of the pain he went through in the past. He does have Stella to lean on at this point, but he still needs to learn how to be open with her about some of his problems. He’s closer to her than anyone and yet even still, he had his fair share of problems.

CarterMatt Verdict

We’re worried about Casey and Dawson — we do think that the producers will find a way to have them work through their differences, but it still feels at present like this is not the end for them. This was more of a building-block episode than one that left our jaw on the ground … but we’re still pretty shocked about Severide’s parents.
