Unfortunately, it is still a little early to say for certain when season 4 is going to premiere. For now, we’re just happy that there is a fourth season. It was easy to have relative confidence on that subject, but at the same time nothing is ever secure in the world of TV — especially when you’re talking about Syfy. This is a series that has a history of canceling many shows left and right and there’s a pretty good chance that they could do so easily here.
Ultimately, what we’ve come to know is that The Magicians does have a habit of airing new episodes in the first few months of the year and we don’t think that this is going to change. This is a time that works well for the show — there’s a little less competition on the air at around this time; also, there are a number of additional viewers home at night with nothing to do. Who wants to sit out in the cold?
It may not be until the fall that Syfy announces what the season 4 premiere date will be; ultimately, though, that’s fine. They have to pick and choose the right time in which to announce additional details. If you do that too early, one of the things that you risk is that you lose a little bit of momentum. However, if you do it too late then you don’t have enough momentum at all. Given that these people are professionals, we’re pretty darn confident that they will figure it out.
As for the creative, that’s where one of the biggest struggles could lie at the moment. After all, can you imagine trying to handle the pressure that is trying to top a season this inventive — with the musical episode in there, as well? This was by far the most ambitious season to date, and we don’t say that likely given that this is a pretty ambitious show. There have always been surprises and we’re more than confident it will stay that way now.
