Should Outlander renewal announcement coincide with season 4 teaser?

At the moment, we know that the internet is chock full of demands for an Outlander renewal — possibly just for season 5, but hopefully for seasons 5 and 6. We floated the idea over the weekend of them going all the way to season 7, but we recognize that this may be a little bit ambitious.

What CarterMatt wants to do now is revisit a topic with further context in mind: When’s the right time to announce the renewal? We know that it’s coming, and for Starz and their marketing team what they have to look at now is figuring out a way to get the most bang for their buck — which in this case mostly just means a way for them to get as much promotion for the show as possible. It makes more sense for them to pair up the renewal announcement with a new trailer — and if they choose to do that, we could have some good news to present sooner rather than later.

Last year, Starz revealed one of the first substantial teasers for season 3 in the middle of April, which is hopefully similar to what the series decides to do this time around. That gives us something to analyze and look at through the remainder of the spring, and for the network that also would serve as the perfect opportunity to announce more seasons. Timing-wise it could also work out wonderfully, given that the writers room would still have plenty of time to open this summer and prepare scripts for whenever season 5 begins filming, presumably as early as the fall. We should note here that Starz doesn’t necessarily need a renewal for the writers to start working in some capacity so long as they’re expecting it; we just think that it benefits everyone to have a renewal shored up at that point.

When it comes to other big venues in which to make the announcement between now and when the series returns, there may not be many. As reported last night it’s still not entirely clear if Outlander will be heading to San Diego Comic-Con this year and even if the show does get some of the nominations it deserves, we don’t think that the series will wait that long in order to confirm a renewal.
