Hawaii Five-0 season 9: Should Alex O’Loughlin direct again?

Eddie the Dog

We’re a few days removed from the first Hawaii Five-0 episode directed by Alex O’Loughlin and with that, doesn’t now seem to be the right time to ask if he will do it again?

Let’s obviously start things off with the basic facts: At the moment, there is no official confirmation that Hawaii Five-0 is officially renewed for a season 9. CarterMatt does think that it’s something that will be coming at some point in the reasonably near future, so we’re not altogether worried about that. We’re also not worried about whether or not Alex is going to return to the series either. He’s been an integral part of the program for a long time and following some of the exits on the show after last season, it really feels like CBS will work double-time in order to make sure a new deal gets done.

With these variables out the window, it feels like the ball is going to be mostly in Alex’s court to determine whether or not he wants to do this again. It is a hefty commitment to make since it takes so much longer than a typical episode cycle to direct. We feel like from a show perspective, it’s almost a given that they would want him back in the director’s chair for a number of different reasons. For starters, it helps to make that episode so much more memorable — there aren’t many times in which an episode gets headlines because of the director and you definitely want to take advantage of that at every possible moment.

Beyond just that, there’s also the opportunity to do a larger promotional tour with Alex to get the word out. His episode last week (which drew the best ratings on the night, by the way) ended up being one of the best sources of Alex-related publicity that Hawaii Five-0 has had in quite some time.
