This Is Us season 3: How big a story will Toby’s depression be?

While CarterMatt only has a few teases at present leading into This Is Us season 3, one of them that is related to Toby is a rather big one: His depression.  You saw a glimpse of that in the closing minutes of the finale, and while he may be happily married and in some ways fulfilled, something else is seemingly coming that could cause the character to crash down.

There has to be concern anytime a character on this show falls into a bad place, mostly because this is the sort of show where bad things happen, characters die, and the struggles people face are meant to mirror some of the struggles people face in real life which really gets it’s audience to think and dig deeper within themselves.

Speaking on this subject to Entertainment Weekly, series star Chrissy Metz did her part to explain that no matter what is coming up for Toby, he is going to have that support system and that is something that is going to continue to carry him through:

“It’s important to note that in relationships, there’s always somebody that might be a little stronger at one time, and then that dynamic switches … He’s helped Kate get through so much of her stuff that she’s really ready to show up for him, and while it might be difficult, it’s going to be necessary because they’re going to contend with some hardships. Yet again. Life on life’s terms.”

We hope that there are some opportunities for Kate and Toby to start a family on this coming season; beyond that, we also hope that we get to see Kate’s relationship evolve more with her brothers. Kevin Pearson is now in a better place and hopefully, the Big Three can actually get more involved in each other’s lives for longer periods of time. It probably is realistic how much the three actually see each other in proportion to the time they spend apart, but that doesn’t stop us from rooting for more. We also feel like, in turn, that could mean that a larger support system for Toby is almost always around.
