Why The Walking Dead season 9 will have different feel

Walking Dead season 8

For those of you who miss some of the earlier days of The Walking Deadhere’s some good news: The plan at the moment seems to be for season 9 to feel like a little bit of a throwback. We could be venturing back in the direction of some of the earlier seasons of the show, back when the stories were more with the characters on the road and things were a little less complicated. These are episodes that we probably took for granted at the time, but upon reflection the lead-up to Terminus is probably one of the best sections of the series’ history.

An obvious change that is coming for The Walking Dead season 9 comes at the top, given that Scott M. Gimple is not going to be serving as the showrunner. Instead, Angela Kang is taking on that role, and she brings her own voice and set of priorities to the proceedings. In discussing that further to Fandom in a new interview, fellow executive producer Greg Nicotero had the following to say:

“Angela has a very clear vision for the show and she has a great voice; she’s got a unique voice … Especially looking back at where our show succeeds the most — in terms of the characters that have the best chemistry together and the locations that [worked well]. It’s always kind of nice to be on the road a little bit. Any time we’re sort of situated in one place for too long… I feel like the show is kind of morphing back into a Season 4, Season 5 kind of vibe.”

Will this cause the show to morph back to its previous levels of commercial success? While that would probably be nice for AMC that ship appears to have sailed. Instead, The Walking Dead just needs to work at this point to satisfy some of the devoted fans who are still watching. If they can stop the bleeding this will still make this show easily the top-rated basic-cable program on TV. We don’t want to see it go out with a whimper, regardless of whenever the producers decide to end it.
