Outlander season 4: Circling back to Murtagh to close out character questions

Murtagh

When it comes to Outlander season 4 and our ongoing Sunday character features, all roads seem to lead to Murtagh.

When we first started off this CarterMatt article series in mid-December following the end of the third season, we kicked it off with a what-if piece surrounding Murtagh, whose fate seemed to be very much up in the air. We wrote about possibilities for him to be in either Scotland or America, and also insisted that the series would not have kept that character alive unless there was some sort of larger plan for him.

Since the time of writing that article, we’ve been able to form a deeper opinion of what the story for Murtagh should be, and also some more clearly-defined aspects that we’d love to see from him when he returns. It doesn’t matter so much where the character is, but we do certainly hope that he is in America given that this is where Jamie and Claire are — if you have this character on the show, don’t you want him to be with Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe as much as possible?

Now, let’s get to some of the possibilities…

More Murtagh backstory – While we understand that there may only be so much time in season 4, we do want to get a sense of just how Murtagh came to be in the position that he’s in. We imagine that it was a long, trying journey and with that, he has a very clear story to tell.

Wisdom – The truth here is that Murtagh is certainly no spring chicken anymore. This character is an older man with a lot of different experiences, and it would be quite nice to see him step into this elder statesman role a little bit more.

An introduction to America – If Murtagh is in fact stateside, he could be a valuable bridge for Jamie to a number of other characters. He could help him get adjusted to this world, while in turn providing many memorable scenes that have some nostalgic elements from the first couple of seasons where he was around for a longer period of time.

A constant ally – There is something to be said in this world for having someone you can rely on, someone who will travel out into the field with you and risk their life in order to ensure that you are safe. It would be great to see Murtagh continue to inhabit that role.

Relationships – Does Mutagh know Aunt Jocasta or Ulysses? If so, we’d like to see that dynamic explored in the early going.

With this, we do now bid adieu to the CarterMatt character questions series — we’ve written articles on everyone from Jocasta, Roger, Bree, Marsali and of course Jamie and Claire, and now we’re ready to move onward into some other themed articles in the weeks to come. We’ll have a little more discussion about that in due time.
