Shadowhunters season 3: What’s the ratings threshold to make season 4 happen?
So what is the ratings expectation at the moment for the upcoming episodes? Let’s start by looking at the season 2 averages — a 0.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic coupled with about 650,000 viewers as a whole. These are nice live+same-day numbers in comparison to how some of the shows on Freeform fare.
Yet, there is also another reality that has to be considered: The ratings for season 2, in both total viewers and the demo, were down more than 30% versus season 1. That’s a little bit concerning and it’s not a trend that we want to see continue moving into season 3.
Moving forward now, our hopes for season 3 are this: Averaging over 600,000 viewers as a whole and a 0.2 rating. This reflects the trajectory that the show was on at the end of season 2, and it’s also fairly realistic. It’s not often that ratings rise from one season to the next and we certainly don’t imagine that this is going to be the case here, either. Yet, we do want to see the numbers level off somewhat — if the numbers hover around where we’ve specified here now, we do think that there is a reasonably good chance that there will be a Shadowhunters season 4 in 2019.

Alas, we don’t expect news on a Shadowhunters renewal for some time. If we are lucky, this is some news that could come about in the fall. The cast is getting close to being done filming season 3; following that, they will have a break before production begins again.
