Is Alexandra Breckenridge leaving This Is Us as a series regular?

Alexandra Breckenridge

Following the events of Tuesday night’s This Is Us season 2 finale, is Alexandra Breckenridge officially leaving the NBC hit as a series regular?

In some ways, even asking this question is somewhat anticlimactic. Given that Breckenridge’s Sophie did not play an enormous role in the second half of the season, coupled with the emergence of the Kevin – Zoe relationship in both the finale and also some of the flash-forwards, it does not appear as though you will be seeing her back in a permanent capacity for season 3. This was reported by TVLine, who suggested that Breckenridge could still return as a guest star. (This news comes in the midst of another series regular promotion for Melanie Liburd, who plays the Zoe character.)

Would it have been nice to root for Kevin and Sophie to figure things out? For sure, but there were no guarantees that they could and there may be too much water under the bridge at this point. Kevin’s drunken antics at her gala was one of the final straws that really tore their relationship apart.

In the aftermath of this news, it would certainly be nice to see Breckenridge get a chance to do a gig somewhere else for the upcoming pilot season with the opportunity to return here and there on This Is Us if the situation called for it. Even if Alexandra herself is not a part of the show in the future, it is certainly possible that the writers could still explore some of the earlier days of the relationship between her and Kevin. That’s the thing with This Is Us — it is enormously flexible because of the structure of the show and the timelines that play out as they do.

New episodes of This Is Us are going to air presumably this fall on NBC.
