Saturday Night Live cold open: The Bachelor, Robert Mueller, Becca Kufrin mocked

Dave Chappelle

Going into this weekend’s Saturday Night Live cold open, there was actually a good bit of ambiguity when it comes to what the main focus of it was going to be. Just think about things from this vantage point: Alec Baldwin wasn’t likely to turn up for the second straight week, and while there were a number of little headlines that the NBC show could draw from, we wouldn’t necessarily say that there was any particular one that stood out head and shoulders above the rest.

So what did the series ultimately decide on in the end? Think a spoof on The Bachelor … with Robert Muller in place of Arie. Cecily Strong was Becca Kufrin, the woman he rejected. We totally didn’t see this twist coming, especially since we haven’t actually seen Kate McKinnon’s character of Robert Mueller coming. The whole premise was that Mueller couldn’t decide to come after Trump for collusion or obstruction.

The whole idea of using Mueller in this position was pretty hilarious, though we’ll be honest and say that we didn’t really think of him as someone undecided as to what he’s doing in his investigation. Nonetheless, we did enjoy just how closely the show chose to follow the Bachelor finale’s own unedited scene featuring Arie and Becca — they even had Mueller say Arie’s signature phrase “I love that” at some point. If you aren’t aware of The Bachelor, there’s a pretty good chance that you had no idea what you were watching here.

Ultimately, we’re pretty happy that SNL chose to open their show with this given that it was timely, and it is better than the writers tried to merge two current events into one rather than trying to just do a straight-up parody of one or another. Plus, we already saw a straightforward spoof of The Bachelor with Arie earlier this season.
