Outlander season 4 character questions: How to incorporate Ian, Laoghaire

Ian Murray

While we’re going to be focusing on a few more new faces in the weeks ahead in our Outlander season 4 character questions, there are two other people we want to discuss briefly: Steven Cree’s Ian Murray and Nell Hudson’s Laoghaire.

While we cannot speak to how big of a role the two characters will have in the story at large, we do know this (minor filming spoiler alert) — the two were recently in Culross filming scenes at the same time as Sophie Skelton. With that, the assumption we are willing to make here is that the three parties have some sort of collective role together. Will Ian and Laoghaire have stories of their own? Given that there’s only so much time and Jamie and Claire are far away, it’s hard to know; yet, they could have very important roles in cultivating a Brianna – Jamie reunion down the road. That moment is pretty high up on the list of things that we most want to see.

Ian’s role – For Cree’s character, we want to see more at this point of what his life is like with Jenny after the departure of Claire, Jamie, Young Ian, Fergus, and Marsali collectively to another part of the world. How is he coping the with the exit of his son, for starters? With Brianna, he may be excited at the opportunity to see family and we would like to believe that he would prove to be rather helpful to her.

(If only there was a way to transfer Ian to America immediately — the more screen time for Cree and Sam Heughan together, the better the world is.)

Laoghaire’s role – Obviously, there could be complications here just on a superficial level. How will she react to seeing her former husband’s daughter from his former / now-current wife in Scotland, especially with her own daughter gone? She could view this as an opportunity to establish some better bond with Jamie and his entire family, or she could choose to be the same venomous woman who once pointed a gun at Claire. This is a chance to see some significant growth and development.

What sort of memories will come up for Laoghaire when she turns up?
