Call the Midwife season 7 episode 7: Could Barbara live or die?
Should the character survive her hospitalization, or is Tom going to have to send off his wife into the afterlife so soon after their return to Poplar? Creatively, there are cases to be made for each circumstance.
Why Barbara could die – The biggest reason is simply because this is a world in which this sort of thing could very well happen. While we find Call the Midwife to be, at least for the most part, an uplifting show, it’s also one that is fairly unflinching in what it chooses to present. If a character needs to die in order to further that end goal, then that is what happens. The show is often bittersweet that way. It’s about perseverance and finding your way through. Even if Barbara does go, this could be used as a narrative engine for Tom moving forward as he tries to rebuild his life and figure out what the remainder of his own existence is going to look like.

Why Barbara could live – That’s really quite simple: It’s the happier outcome and while Call the Midwife has killed off characters before, they don’t tend to really do so that often when it comes to major characters. It has happened, but it’s rare and hasn’t really transpired with the younger midwives. While characters like Patsy and Jenny are no longer a part of the series, they were written out in such a way that makes us think they are still out there living their lives. If Charlotte Ritchie were to ever leave, we like to hope that this would be the outcome instead of killing her off in such a way.
One way or another, viewers in the UK will learn this weekend.
