MasterChef Junior premiere leads night over MacGyver, Blue Bloods
The first episode of the cooking competition won Friday with a 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic, narrowly beating new episodes of Hawaii Five-0 and Blue Bloods, which each posted a 0.9. Blue Bloods actually won the night with almost 9 million viewers, so consider that another reminder that the CBS series tends to skew very old in comparison to most of the competition.
The appeal of both MasterChef Junior and almost everything else Gordon does really stems from how easily to digest they are — you’re welcome for the food pun. You can come in at any time and it doesn’t really matter if you’ve missed a few episodes. This show in particular is lighthearted and inspiring — Gordon just has a charisma around him that makes him entertaining to watch. We’re not trying to diminish the abilities of anyone else on this show either on or off-camera, but when you look at this, Hell’s Kitchen, or even Kitchen Nightmares when that was on the air for many years, Gordon was the common thread in all of them.
MasterChef Junior did drop slightly in the second episode, but that’s not altogether a surprise given that two hours of anything in this world of everyone having pretty short attention spans is a lot.

We’ll see how some of these ratings hold up the remainder of the season but for now, there is absolutely zero reason to worry about the MasterChef franchise. It feels like a pretty sure thing that it will remain hovering around the schedule for a rather long time to come.
