The Walking Dead season 8: Could Rick die? Final shot draws questions
If you do love Rick, you should take some solace in this simple fact: The character is not leaving The Walking Dead in the near future. While the status of one of his fellow cast members in Lauren Cohan is in a certain degree of jeopardy, Lincoln himself signed a contract that will keep him on board for the ninth season. With that in mind, there is at least a certain degree of confidence that you can have that Rick is staying put in some capacity.
As for beyond that, the jury is still out. We do think that the death of Carl has huge reverberations across the show’s viewership, but we do also wonder what it does to the cast to lose someone widely considered to be one of the most stable people in the entire cast. Does that make them question some of their own future a little bit? It may at least have some of them asking questions about the show’s endgame. We are eight years in and a ninth is coming up — beyond that, it’s fairly easy to envision that a season 10 will be coming on the other side of the horizon. We do envision there being two more seasons at least, but beyond that who knows?
As we reported recently, we were fairly confident that both Rick and Daryl weren’t going anywhere in the near future. We do still hold true to that; maybe Rick dies before the end of the series finale, but with Carl gone Daryl is now #1 on the list of people we envision being around until the closing seconds of the show.
What the closing minutes to us say more than anything else is that Rick may not have been able to fulfill his promise to Carl. He wanted to help create a better future where everyone works together and when we first saw the stained glass hanging from the tree we thought he had rebuilt the church that Carl died in and that things were growing. We don’t expect that Carl’s vision of Negan and Rick working together in harmony is ever going to be a thing, but we do think that Rick is going to do what he can to try to make some of it happen with anyone will to be part of it.
