Scandal season 7 spoilers: Grey’s Anatomy alum Michael O’Neill cast in mystery role

The final season of Scandal has another significant guest star, and this one is very memorable for all fans of Shonda Rhimes series.

Per TVLine, Michael O’Neill is being brought on board for some sort of arc over the course of the home stretch of the season. Given that this is Scandal, don’t be shocked if they don’t give you any more details until the actor actually appears. O’Neill is probably best known to Shondaland fans as Gary Clark, the man responsible for the traumatizing hospital shooting that took place several years ago. That storyline remains one of the most harrowing that the ABC series has ever done, especially now when you think about the present-day climate around shootings.

Some of O’Neill’s other credits include Bates Motel, NCIS, and Rectify — he’s one of those great character actors who you’ve likely had a chance to see in a wide array of different things over the years.

At this point, Scandal is not bringing in new guest stars in order to focus on their story and journey across several episodes. The safe bet at the moment with O’Neill’s character is that it, in one form or another, is probably going to be tied to something major that happens with an established character. Every person who is brought on board at this point really needs to serve some sort of larger purpose. By and large, we imagine that this purpose is going to be tied to what’s happened with a regular. That’s just the state of where we are at the moment with the series.

When the series returns, the top priority is going to be doing the How to Get Away with Murder crossover. We envision that mostly just as a gift for people who watch both shows. It may be connected in some way to the larger narrative but we don’t see it as altogether necessarily to establishing the endgame. O’Neill’s character may have more of a larger role in that.
