NCIS season 15: The path to Pauley Perrette’s departure
While it’s still a little early to tell how Pauley Perrette’s departure is going to play out on NCIS, one thing is starting to become clear: She is making it into as much of a celebration as possible. It’s been fifteen great years of Abby, and with that expect plenty of happy moments to come along with some fun Easter eggs that should please many longtime fans. You may have seen some of this so far, and it absolutely feels as though there are going to be some other great ones coming up.
For a little more insight on Perrette’s mindset around her farewell, check out what Rocky Carroll had to say on the subject to TVLine recently:
“Her approach to [leaving] is to have fun with this … What she has been doing for her fans is make sprinkle in callbacks, certain Abby-isms, these little treats that the diehard NCIS fans will recognize. It’s her ‘farewell’ card to the audience, where people will see it and go, ‘Oh my god, that’s from Season 2, when this happened with Tony’ or ‘when this happened with Kate.’ She’s trying to take you on this treasure hunt, where every time you’re watching one of her scenes there’s a throwback to a previous season.”
Basically, what this happens to be is Perrette acknowledging the vast impact that her series has had on many fans over the years. It’s hard to overstate the importance of her to NCIS over time and her status as one of TV’s most well-known characters around the world. Out of people who are currently a part of the modern TV climate, we’d put her up there with Sheldon Cooper or Daenerys Targeryan.
How should Abby leave?
It shouldn’t be sad because this character has never been about sadness. We want to see her going off and finding another opportunity that is challenging, exciting, and could offer up a chance for her to return in the future. It would be great to see more Perrette in the future, even if it’s just for a milestone episode or a series finale.
For now, though, let’s just focus on being in the moment and getting the departure of Abby right. There’ll be chances for everything else in the future.
