Hawaii Five-0 season 8 midseason spotlight: Steve McGarrett’s future

Steve McGarrett

Welcome to Hawaii Five-0 season 8 midseason spotlight week! Throughout the next seven days, one of our primary objectives is to give you new feature pieces on all of the various characters who populate the hit CBS show. We’ll talk about their journey so far, where they’ve been, and also where they could be going next.

Hopefully, consider all of these little appetizers (not the kind that will be served presumably at McDanno’s Bar & Grill — we’re still calling it that) between now and when the series returns on March 2. What better place to start than with Steve McGarrett? Alex O’Loughlin’s character is the captain that steers the ship, and the man who really does a great job of epitomizing what this series is all about. He can tackle great dramatic material, while also having plenty of fun with Danny along the way.

1. Undercover with Danny – This has to be on the list. while it’s hardly a new concept, there’s always something about these two guys undercover that is going to put a smile on our faces. We like to see the two of them in a spot where they can of course take down some bad guys, but also bicker and stumble along the way. They may be heroes, but they aren’t exactly perfect.

2. More of Eddie on the job – Having the dog on the show is great from the vantage point of giving Steve a new companion, but it’s also about more than that. What it offers up with this series above all else is an opportunity to bring in a little bit more dimension in ways that Five-0 can help to solve cases. Also, everyone loves dogs!

3. Lynn – Regardless of whether you’re a big Steve / Lynn fan, the relationships between the main characters and their significant others need to be addressed more. Even if Sarah Carter isn’t available, why not bring her up in the story?

4. The restaurant opening – We want to see how he and Danny operate something like the first night of actual service — the two have a sort of controlled chaos, one where they are able to succeed even when it looks like there is a zero percent chance that they will. This could prove interesting through the lens of food service as opposed to law enforcement.

5. The radiation poisoning coming back into the story – We obviously don’t want McGarrett to die, but this is something he’s going to be aware of for the remainder of his life. Given that he nearly dies on an almost daily basis because of his job, Steve probably has a good sense of his mortality. Still, this particular uncontrollable factor, no matter his career now, allows more wrinkles for O’Loughlin to play.
