NCIS: Los Angeles season 9 midseason spotlight: The future of Linda Hunt’s Hetty

For the final edition of our ongoing NCIS: Los Angeles season 9 midseason spotlight, it felt appropriate that we would spend a little bit of time now discussing the future of Linda Hunt’s Hetty. After all, the entirety of the cliffhanger presented on the series at present is almost exclusively about her. She’s trapped in Vietnam, and we know that Sam, Callen, and others are going to do just about everything that they can in order to help her.

The first order of business when it comes to charting out Hetty’s future is simply this: We need to see her make it out of this situation alive! While this may be very much a no brainer it is absolutely still true. This is a woman who has been through an incredible amount of pain and suffering and she absolutely deserves a win. We want this rescue to be joyous and celebratory, and have it be something that then carries through the rest of the season.

Also, it would be nice for her to have reunion scenes with many of the other great characters on the show as well. While Hetty is likely to spend a little bit of time with Sam, Callen, Deeks, and Kensi on the other side of the world, once she arrives back home (provided that happens) it would be nice for her to also have a few nice reunion scenes with Nell and Eric, while she is at it. These two characters have their own relationship with her and that needs to be embraced.

The third thing that needs to be accomplished is something that is often ignored by some other crime procedurals: The aftereffects of the trauma. While we know that Hetty is just about as tough-as-nails as they come, it doesn’t feel realistic for her to suddenly emerge on the other side of this struggle acting as though she is fine. That’s just not indicative of how real life often works. We would appreciate more seeing her being counseled and have there be some work that allows her to get better in time. This is also an important message to send out to viewers at home, as well — there’s is a way to get better, but it’s unrealistic to expect things to be changed in an instant.
