NCIS: Los Angeles season 9 midseason spotlight: Callen’s future

What should Callen’s future hold on NCIS: Los Angeles season 9? In this midseason spotlight, we want to start off with a simple declaration: We need more Callen-centric episodes in general. We could say the same thing about the majority of the core cast. It feels in some ways like the first half of season 9 spent too much time on case-of-the-week plots that won’t be altogether memorable as opposed to personal stories that feature some more of the main characters.

So what should we see from Callen going forward until the end of this season? CarterMatt has a few suggestions…

1. Flash back to an earlier part of his life – Callen still has a lot of mystery about his life, and we really would love to explore more of the formative periods. We want some stories tied more to when he was a teenager and young adult, figuring out precisely what he wanted to make of himself.

2. Give us Arkady and Anna – Preferably in the same episode. We know that Anna’s a polarizing character and we’re not necessarily advocating for her to be a permanent part of the team. Yet, there’s been enough of an investment in her and Arkady both that we’d like to see the two pop up occasionally — preferably in the same episode to give Chris O’Donnell the best material possible.

3. Being a friend to Sam – Our favorite scene for Callen so far this season was him visiting Sam while he works on his boat. We know that there’s only so much we can get of these two away from the case, but these bonding moments are essential — it gives you a better sense of who they are as people and how close they really are outside of cases.

4. Screen time with Eric and Nell – We’d love to see the case where the two are paired off on their own — or really Callen with anyone who isn’t Deeks, Kensi, or Sam. We love these pairings, but for an episode it’s fun to paint a slightly-different picture. There are 24 episodes a season! That gives you a chance to mix things up a little bit.
