Outlander perspectives: What was the greatest season 3 scene?

Watch the Outlander season 3 premiere

What are some of the greatest Outlander season 3 scenes? That is the focus of today’s edition of our ongoing perspectives series, but as you can probably imagine this was a rather tough list to narrow down! We’ve spent all day pondering it over before coming down to the random number of eight scenes that stand out to us the most in retrospect. Some are notable because of the content, some are notable because of the performances, and others are notable because of the look or the feel. A “great” scene can be defined ultimately in such a wide array of ways, and we imagine that it would be for all of you, as well.

Just like we’ve done all week long (this series will continue through Monday), we’re going to attach a vote for you below to share your favorite scene. Voting is open from now until February 16 at 4:00 p.m. Eastern. Have fun! We’re designing these mostly to gauge interest of readers and also just creating some fun discussion between now and when the series comes back.

Battle of Culloden – Just in terms of sheer visual spectacle, this is one of the most incredible achievements that we’ve seen in recent TV history. It was stunning, harrowing, and garish in all the right ways. It helped to kick off season 3 in truly epic fashion.

Jamie with William – Some of the closing moments between Jamie and his boy in “Of Lost Things” were nothing short of fantastic. It was a very different dimension to Sam Heughan’s performance than what we’d seen to date.

Claire leaves Brianna and Roger – This moment within “Freedom & Whisky” was intimate and meaningful; it allowed Claire to give a proper goodbye, and beyond that it gave us arguably some of the most important Roger / Bree moments on the series to date. Also, Caitriona Balfe was on another level here.

Print Shop scene – Did you really think that we weren’t going to put this on here? It’s probably the scene that most fans have been waiting to see for ages and it brought out so many different emotions for Jamie and Claire.

Young Ian’s capture – The way that the cinematography played this in “First Wife” was nothing short of outstanding. In terms of plot importance, this also set in stone pretty much everything that came after the remainder of the season.

Fergus and Marsali’s wedding – There were so many things going on here in “Uncharted,” in between Claire and Jamie’s reunion, Father Fogden, and of course another memorable scene that followed. Still, we rather love the way this wedding came together.

Turtle soup – How can we not include this? Next to the Print Shop, it may have been one of the most-anticipated scenes heading into the season. Yes, there’s romance, but the sheer amount of humor mixed in here allows it to stand out above many others this season.

The death of Geillis – The buildup here was so fantastic, but then so was watching Claire basically behead Lotte Verbeek’s character only to then connect all the dots and realize that it was Geillis’ own bones that were being studied back centuries in the future.
