Homeland season 7 premiere preview: Prepare for a country in collapse
Let’s set the table for this episode. Peter Quinn is dead, and to go along with that the entire United States is facing some significant trouble with President Keane now leading. Her and her advisers have removed almost any voice in disagreement with them including Carrie, and the level of isolationism they are showing is dangerous. If they just choose to do everything that they want, they could spin the entire government out of control. It’s a significant concern.
To make matters worse, Saul is in prison. Eventually an offer will be brought to him that could dramatically alter his fate, but for now things are not looking good for him.
Homeland has always been a show trying to reflect the issues the country has faced, and for many of its earlier seasons those issues were overseas. Yet, in season 6 the series focused more on domestic terrorism and going into season 7, the focus seems to be shifting more towards some significant danger within the White House. This is a more difficult danger to figure out given that it’s one that can’t be contained without Congress and others stepping in. Carrie can’t stop it on her own — she is in Washington DC, but she may as well be halfway around the world.

It may sound depressing, and it may very well may be, but all early indications are that Homeland season 7 is going to be one about hopelessness. How do you find optimism when so much was taken from you, including even the authority of the government? This is something that hopefully this series is going to explore more as the season progresses and some of the specific dangers are made even more clear.
