This Is Us season 2 episode 15: Jack’s funeral lies ahead

Jack's funeral

This Is Us season 2 episode 15 on NBC Tuesday night has a lot to mine insofar as material goes. This is going to bring us to the other side of what happened on the Super Bowl episode with Jack’s death — you’ll see how the character impacted many different lives in many different ways, but before that, Jack’s funeral will be a focus.

How will Jack’s funeral play out on the show? It certainly seems as though it’s going to be a tear-jerker (as many episodes of this show are). There was some celebration as some of the characters reflected on Jack twenty years following his death in the Super Bowl episode; here, you’re being thrown back into the fire as several characters all digest what happened in the days after his death. This is an experience that Mandy Moore describes by saying the following to Entertainment Weekly:

“I think that it’s more gut-wrenching than [the Super Bowl episode] because people knew what to expect … They were like, ‘All right — this is it.’ You’re bracing for impact. You know that this is the episode where you get all the answers that you’ve been asking since the show started. [With “Across the Border”], in typical This Is Us fashion, they’ve found a way to meld really beautiful stories from the past to highlight what an incredible example of a man and a father and a husband that Jack was in every sense. They highlight every one of his most winning attributes and couple that with us going through the steps of burying him — of saying goodbye to him … It’s rip-your-heart-out sad. I thought when we were shooting that this was even more challenging, as an actor.”

Maybe there will be hope on the other side for some of these characters, but it’s going to take some time in order to get there. CarterMatt just hopes that there are some occasions in here in which we can smile and laugh. While we know that This Is Us is a show that often brings the waterworks, at the same exact time there needs to be opportunities here and there for smiles. We don’t want the show to become so unrelenting in its depression that it becomes difficult to watch.

Tuesday’s “Across the Border” will be a time to reflect. Then, hopefully on the other side there are new horizons to explore. The one concern the show runs into is that in transfixing so much on Jack’s death some of the momentum may be lost.
