Once Upon a Time ending: Season 7 will be final season
The news was confirmed on Tuesday, which means effectively that Once Upon a Time is going to wrap up its run on ABC as one of the longest-running fantasy series out there. It will have produced more than 150 episodes and spanned a wide array of different fairy-tales.
We’ll admit that for most of this past fall, we were fairly confident that the end was near when it comes to the show. The ratings for season 7 started off sluggish and only got worse from there — moving to Friday nights was a mistake in terms of live viewers, and the exit of original series stars Jennifer Morrison, Ginnifer Goodwin, and Josh Dallas did not help. Other regulars, including Emilie de Ravin, Jared Gilmore, and Rebecca Mader were written out by producers, but have since returned in some capacity.
One of the reasons CarterMatt’s thought process in regards to season 7 started to change was, in part, because of ABC’s comments about the show’s DVR ratings at the TCA Winter Press Tour. They expressed a little more confidence in the show’s future than we expected and as a result of that, there started to be the tiniest glimmer of hope that the franchise could continue a little while longer. That glimmer is now gone.
Here is what executive producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis had to say in a statement:
“Seven years ago, we set out to create a show about hope, where even in the darkest of times, a happy ending would always be possible … But we never imagined the happy ending that was actually in store for all of us — years and years of adventure, romance, magic and hope. We’re so grateful to our brilliant collaborators — the cast, crew, and writers — as well as our partners at the studio and network for making this journey possible. But most of all, we want to thank the fans. Their fierce loyalty and devotion was the real magic behind Once Upon a Time. We hope they join us for these last few hours as we journey to the Enchanted Forest for one more adventure.”
Now that we know that Once Upon a Time is in fact ending, at least we can say that now is the right time to make that happen. It gives the writers a chance to be able to come up with a fitting ending for most of these characters, and also do everything that they can in order to bring back some of the other great actors and characters from the past. There’s still time to write together the best finale possible and film it before the series finale airs this May.
