Supergirl season 3 episode 13 review: Who knows the truth about Sam?

Supergirl season 3 episode 13

It was pretty early on Supergirl season 3 episode 13 where we had a chance to get to know Purity … otherwise known as Julia Freeman. When we first met the character tonight, she was existing in the form of the latter. Unfortunately, once she was awakened by the danger Supergirl and Alex brought to her home, it was hard getting her to turn back — think of her as Black Siren or Silver Banshee on steroids. She is loud, and she certain was proud. She also seemed to relish in Alex thinking that the DEO had found an adequate way of containing her. Supergirl wanted to get through to Julia to see if they could get answers on who she was and possibly Reign; however, Alex wanted to play bad cop.

The part of this episode that didn’t make a whole lot of sense was this — why was Alex so angry almost the entire episode? She spent the start of this season intent on making Kara feel better so she could start to see the good in the world again. However, tonight she showed a very different side. We’d say that her desire to get through to Purity with rage is in part what caused things to fall apart.

When Purity escaped, she did almost exactly what we expected from her — she got away from her captors while awaiting what came next. Reign was reawakened, which mostly proved to be problematic because of the fact that Samantha was skating with Ruby at the time. She abandoned her daughter without knowing it in order to meet up with Purity.

Supergirl had done everything that she possibly could to track Reign down, and that led to an epic battle at a subway station. The team was a little more prepared to deal with some of her sonic frequencies. They weren’t as prepared for the entire subway station starting to come down. That was a distraction that Purity used in order to get the upper hand.

Alex comes around

This is where the Supergirl staff managed to turn around some Alex’s erratic behavior from earlier in the episode. It was her who ended up saving Supergirl’s life by realizing that she could get through to Julia within Purity’s body and that her sister was right. Good news, right? Well, it was short-lived. Reign showed up, collected Julia, and most of what the Danvers sisters did was all for naught … at least in the moment.

So what did the team get out of this confrontation? It was really rather simple: They realized that there may be another way to defeat some of the Worldkillers that was not just beating them down physically. There may be a way to get through to them morally and to pull the people whose bodies they inhabit back to the forefront. That should make the objective rather clear: Trying to figure out a way in which to get the real person out of Reign.

The Imra twist

While it seemed as though the entire story when it comes to Mon-El tonight was all about his feelings, that turns out to not be the case. It turns out that Imra and the rest of the Legion of Superheroes is in the past for a specific mission … one that they haven’t told Mon-El yet.

The other twist

Well, it turns out that Samantha and Lena are at the center of the central twist of the hour. The two got in an argument over just how much Lena was telling Ruby, but in the end, Lena saw something else briefly take over in Sam’s body. Judging from the end, it seems as though Lena now knows precisely what’s happening to her.

CarterMatt Verdict

Supergirl season 3 episode 13 delivered an emotional episode that served as good closure for the series for now; while we didn’t love Alex flip-flopping when it comes to morality (especially when she didn’t know better), the payoff of the final few episodes helped to make up for it.
