Wynonna Earp season 3: Megan Follows playing Wynonna’s mother

There’s no more reason to wonder as to who is playing Wynonna’s mother on Wynonna Earp — the news, as of Monday morning, is finally official.

CarterMatt has learned that Reign actress Megan Follows has been officially been brought on board as the character, who was set up in the closing minutes of the season 2 finale. Once presumed dead, she could very well have a big role in the central mythology of season 3, which is slated to premiere on Syfy / Space later this year.

In a statement confirming the casting, showrunner Emily Andras had the following to say:

“Megan Follows is one of Canada’s most beloved and versatile performers, and we are beyond thrilled to have her onboard for such an iconic role. Her ferocity and fearlessness will fit in fabulously with the rest of our phenomenal cast.”

We may as well go ahead now and address what is the elephant in the room — we’re obviously well aware of the campaign that was out there to get Lucy Lawless in the role and we get that — she’s fantastic and we understand the through-lines that are there culturally between Xena: Warrior Princess and Wynonna Earp. Nonetheless, we do think that Follows is an excellent choice. She’s appeared on a number of great shows including Heartland, Anne of Green Gables, and Second Chances; also, we do love it when Canadian talent gets a chance to shine on a series that is currently filming in Alberta. Follows, (who is originally from Toronto – a city that we love and lived in for many years) likely knows a thing or two about braving the cold. A good many actors on Wynonna Earp are Canadian, including Katherine Barrell, Melanie Scrofano, Tim Rozon, and more.

We imagine that there will be even more guest-casting announcements in the weeks to come, especially since we’re only a couple of weeks into season 3 production. Given that Wynonna Earp season 3 isn’t going to make life any easier in Purgatory, there will likely be some other threats lurking around various corners.
