Supergirl: Can Alex and Maggie both get everything they want?

Maggie and Alex

Mrs. Carter: Is there a way to get Alex and Maggie back together on Supergirlwithout changing any of the story that has been established on the series so far?

We’ve been thinking about this subject over the past couple of weeks, really ever since Maggie’s name was brought up on the show again. The desire for more Sanvers among the fans of the show is clear, and both the producers and Floriana Lima have shown that they are keen to do a reunion. From here, the struggle is mostly all about figuring out the mechanics of it and finding the right way for the return to happen.

Unfortunately, a return from Maggie does not inherently mean that she and Alex get back together. There is still a problem that inherently exists there in what the writers have already established: Alex wants kids and Maggie doesn’t. We understand why this was settled on as a reason for the breakup, given that this fundamental difference in life goals is the cause of many heartbreaking splits in real life. The show may often be over-the-top and fantasy-driven, but it makes some sense that they would want to ground this breakup in a way that many viewers can relate to it.

Yet, breakups don’t have to stick, and you don’t have to suddenly forget about the journey Maggie and Alex have been on so far to get them back together. You can have both.

How to make it happen

On the show at present, it feels pretty clear that at some point down the line Alex could end up adopting Ruby. After all Ruby’s mother Samantha is Reign, and we’re not quite sure there is a way to stop Reign without also killing Samantha. That’s a painful thing to think about but in the superhero world, there aren’t always happy endings. Alex already cares about Ruby and the two clearly have a good relationship — interestingly enough, Ruby also knows about Maggie since there was the whole issue with the passport.

If Lima was to return to the show down the road, after Alex potentially adopts Ruby, we could then see a turning of the tide. Any person, man or woman, often changes what they want over the course of their lives. It’s not weird that Maggie wouldn’t want kids now only to want them five years down the road. Also, it’s not weird that Maggie could see Alex and Ruby together and decide that she wants to be a part of that family. Ruby’s a great kid, and that could help her to realize that she actually did want kids all along and was just being judgmental based on preconceived notions. It’s also possible that because Ruby is older, she feels differently than she would taking care of a baby or a toddler.

If the writers chose to go with this story (which would likely build into season 4), it would be a fantastic, loving, and realistic story about how people change over time and how sometimes there are specific catalysts that cause that change. Maggie broke up with Alex in part because she wanted her to be happy and realized that there was one part of her future that she wasn’t able to give her. If that changes because of Ruby or because of seeing Ruby and Alex together, we want to believe that Maggie would jump in to a new relationship / potential engagement with both feet.

It’s too early to know how realistic the idea is given that Lima’s potential Supergirl return hasn’t been set in stone just yet. This is just a true-to-life concept that the writers should really start to consider.
