Chicago Fire season 6: Should we worry for Taylor Kinney, Jesse Spencer’s future?
In the closing seconds of Thursday night’s new episode (read our full review here), we saw Casey and Severide make one of the bolder decisions that we’ve seen from them since the start of the series: As a means to save their lives in the midst of a very dangerous chemical fire, alongside the lives of others, they held onto a valve for as long as they could before jumping into the water below. This was as close to a big-budget action movie as Chicago Fire is going to get, and it was absolutely an exciting conclusion to behold.
Is it going to be rather sad on the other side? It could be, given that this ending does set the stage potentially for one of these characters to be killed off. Yet, we’d be almost surprised to see it happen.
The character we’re probably the more worried about right now is Kelly Severide. Casey was just at the center of an epic cliffhanger with his life on the line this past May, and we just don’t see the life-or-death stakes being on that level here. Sure, he is trying something super-dangerous here, but provided that the two guys didn’t screw up the jump they should land in the water okay.
As for Severide, the reason to show more concern towards him is mostly just a function of him not having that same sort of cliffhanger in recent memory. Also, if he does end up dying for whatever reason in this episode, at least he is going to be going out in a great way. He just tried to turn down commendation, stating that the only thing he really wants to do on this job is save lives. He’s done that, and there is a certain degree of fulfillment that he has. Granted, we don’t want to see him go, and the same goes for any actor who is a part of this show. A big part of what makes Firehouse 51 great is family. It’s fair to assume that eventually, this family is going to be splitting up. We just hope that it is not at some point in the reasonably near future.
For now…
There are no direct indications that either Spencer or Kinney are leaving. We’re not 100% ruling it out, but after everything else these two guys have gone through, this feels like it’s far from the end. Check back on the other side of the Olympics and we’ll have a little bit more discussion on the aftermath of what happened!
