Supergirl season 3 episode 12 review: The Lexosuit and a fantastic Katie McGrath performance

Lexosuit

Moving into Supergirl season 3 episode 12 on The CW Monday night, it was pretty darn clear what the priority was for Kara Danvers: Trying to figure out a way to discover other Worldkillers. If she can get to them before Reign does, they can neutralize her and limit her powers.

While the DEO waited for Reign’s resurgence, there were other sudden issues that Supergirl and the rest of the cast had to deal with. Take, for example, Morgan Edge nearly dying as his fancy car was hacked. He was just in the midst of a conversation with Lena Luthor beforehand; following what transpired, he accused her of murder and barged right into her office. This confrontation was intense but Lena professed her innocence. Right after that, she was poisoned by someone bringing her coffee. James Olsen was immediately on the case, which gave us in part one of the biggest action sequences for Mehcad Brooks in some time. Too bad the dude died before he could hand down any further information.

Did Lena die? She would have were it not for Kara bringing her to the DEO so Alex could help her. (Isn’t it a good thing Lena didn’t notice that it was Kara, not Supergirl, flying her to safety? She kind of did, but was “dreaming” and didn’t believe it.) While Kara did this, James put on the Guardian costume and took it upon himself to threaten Morgan with his life if he ever did something like this again.

When Lena eventually came to, we saw her in the midst of her biggest moral struggle to date: Whether or not to kill Morgan Edge herself before any more trouble can come to her. She tried to follow the trail to who killed the hitman out to poison her, and the road eventually led to her mother. She wasn’t the killer, but she was the person responsible for taking out Morgan and wanted to use her slowly-stewing darkness in order to ensure that she became more like Lex Luthor. That included her focusing more on her technology business and a little less on a “vanity business” like CatCo Worldwide Media.

Alex tests out Samantha

At the end of this past episode, Sam decided that she needed to figure out why she was missing so much time — with that, Alex volunteered to help her undergo some tests and figure out precisely what was going on with her. Unfortunately, the first round of tests didn’t really turn up anything; Alex offered to send the MRI scans and some blood-work elsewhere in hopes of getting some additional information.

Both the Samantha and Lena story came to a head when all of our leading ladies met up together to talk about Sam’s condition. After that, Lena then confessed to Kara that she did almost kill Morgan Edge a little bit later this season. Also, Lena realized that her mother was going to kill Edge even if she wasn’t. She needed Kara’s help to put a stop to it.

Both Kara and Lena Luthor decided to attend a very public gala as a means to save Edge from Lillian — without the two of them being there, it’s pretty clear that Edge would no longer be among the living. Here’s where things got a little crazy: In order to finish the job on Morgan Edge, Lillian decided to debut the show’s version of the Lexosuit from the comics. Who knew that we’d be seeing Lena’s mom suddenly becoming a supervillain and a serious threat?

The good news is that Lillian failed; meanwhile, another bit of good news is that after admitting to attempted murder, Morgan found himself arrested. For the first time in a long time, Lena could breathe a little bit easier.

The aftermath

The results of all results were in, and it turned out that Samantha didn’t have a brain tumor or anything else. That was a relief, but she still couldn’t figure out what in the world was wrong with her. Following this, Winn Schott was able to figure out a number of possible Worldkiller suspects. Kara was able to single out Julia Freeman as the next target … and the story unfolds from here.

CarterMatt Verdict

“For Good” was a great episode, anchored in part by a great performance by Katie McGrath as Lena started to own all parts of her personality — she had the ability to manipulate, but opted to use some of her own social abilities for good … hence the title.
