Here’s one This Is Us conspiracy theory that can be put to rest…
The whole origination of this theory stems from this past episode during Randall and Kevin’s discussion about mortality. In the midst of some of this conversation Randall made statements about not being able to see himself as an old man … and with that came theories that the writers were foreshadowing something terrible. When will the despair end for the Pearsons? They’ve already lost Jack and Randall also lost his biological father William. Having another person exit their family in an untimely manner would be devastating.
Luckily, it doesn’t seem as though there is any merit to this theory — at least for now. Show executive producer Dan Fogelman confirmed as much in an interview with Entertainment Weekly on the subject:
“I can assure everybody that we’re not killing Randall this season, so everybody can relax … I think they would burn my house down. I’ve experienced with a lot of friends, when you’ve lost a parent, particularly for whatever reason a parent of the same sex —a guy losing his father or a girl losing her mother early — there can be a slight mortality clock that kicks in a bit earlier than it does on other people, especially since it was formative. And I think that’s something Randall and Kevin feel.”
Fogelman adds that the entire purpose of that scene was to illustrate how everyone looks at mortality in different ways. It was not meant to be some sort of foreboding warning that death is going to come knocking at Randall’s door soon. We are slightly worried about him doing so much dangerous work at the new apartment building, but sometimes that doesn’t matter. Sometimes death comes about via random chance or a Crock-Pot going rogue. You have to live your life to the fullest and roll with the punches.
At least for now we don’t have to roll with the possibility of a This Is Us without Randall in the near future.
