This Is Us season 2 theory: Is this why Kate blames herself for Jack’s death?

Kate's pregnancy

Get your tissues ready — CarterMatt is coming your way with a theory regarding one of the most-heartbreaking events on This Is Us.

For well over a year now, there has been speculation regarding Jack’s death and there have been question after question regarding how it happened and why. There are a few things that we do know for sure: The fire at the Pearson family home is a huge part of the mystery, said fire was started by a faulty Crock-Pot that was more than 20 years old, and that Kate ultimately blames herself for what happened to him.

There are a few other interesting questions to wonder here. For example, why such an emphasis on Jack starting up his house-flipping business? Is that just to tie in to what’s happening with Randall in the future, or is his work tied somehow into how he acts in the fire or how he gets back on the scene? Or, why there is the constant focus on the family dog Louie? Is it possible that Jack goes back into the fire to try to save Louie and, in turn, doesn’t make it out alive?

This obviously makes a certain degree of sense, given that Kate obviously has an emotional attachment to dogs and was hesitant to adopt Audio for Toby on Tuesday night because of it. If she is the reason Jack went back into the fire, that’s something she could hold with her for the rest of her life.

Yet, there is one hole in this theory: Louie makes it out alive. We know that the dog doesn’t die, but it’s possible that Jack either A) doesn’t know the dog is safe when he goes back in or B) Kate sends him in, unsure of the dog’s safety. One way or another, Louie seems tied to this in some way; yet, This Is Us is a show full of twists, and you can argue that the Louie the Dog theory is almost too obvious. The dog could be tied to what happens in some other way.

On the other side of the fire, there is another interesting question to wonder: If what happens with Jack and the fire changes things in regards to how Kate feels about Louie. The idea of her giving the dog up is heartbreaking, but it is a possibility if all she thinks of him when she sees him is pain.
