Is Dennis leaving It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia? Glenn Howerton explains

The latest -

Is Dennis leaving It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia? Despite there being conversation out there on this subject for a while, that subject has been reignited over the past several days thanks, in part, to Glenn Howerton’s upcoming NBC series AP Bio.

Before diving too much further into this, let’s reset things to a certain degree: At the end of this past season of Sunny we saw Dennis make the decision to actually leave the bar and Philadelphia in order to start a new life in Nebraska. This, in turn, put the character’s future in limbo. Because of Howerton’s new show, that caused conversation that the future of him on the show itself is in limbo. That remains the case, despite some quotes over the past few days that he is for sure coming back as the character. He remains very involved still behind the scenes, but how much he actually appears remains to be seen.

This is something that Howerton confirmed in a series of tweets, where he describes how some of his words have been taken out of context:

I don’t know why people are putting out articles saying that I confirmed that Dennis is coming back. I never said that. What I said is that it is POSSIBLE that he’ll come back. What I also said is that whether Dennis comes back or not has nothing to do with AP Bio. They are 2 separate projects. It is a creative decision that Rob, Charlie and I have to make once the writing process starts, which it hasn’t yet. Telling you whether or not Dennis is coming back would be giving away the plot of the next season. So… to clarify once and for all. I don’t know if Dennis is coming back. He left the bar. We take that plot choice seriously. I don’t know why the narrative continues to be centered around whether “I’m” coming back. I’m here. It’s whether or not “Dennis” is coming back. Dennis could be gone forever. Please don’t think that AP Bio is taking me away from Sunny. It isn’t. That’s like saying that Jumanji is taking The Rock away from Fast and Furious. They are different projects. Thanks guys. I can’t wait for you all to see AP Bio.

One clear thing to remember here is this — Kaitlin Olson is also still involved despite her having another show in The Mick. It’s not exactly fair to assume that Howerton is leaving for sure because of another project. We hope that Dennis is back just because the gang is not the same without him — but, it has to feel right for the story.
