Is a Wynonna Earp season 4 a lock? It should be, but there’s work to do

Even though Wynonna Earp season 3 isn’t premiering until later this year, we certainly don’t think it’s too early to shy away from discussions on a Wynonna Earp season 4! After all, there’s clearly going to be a demand out there for it … consider us arriving early to the party.

If we were to create a vision in our head of the show’s future, it would be of a season 4 renewal arriving before season 3 even premieres. Will that happen? Probably not, and mostly because the live ratings are on the lower end of the gamut for Syfy. While these don’t matter anywhere near as much as they used to (there are so many other ways in which viewers can watch television now!), they are still important. We’re fairly confident that the network will do the right thing in the end, but it may take more than just viewing the live ratings.

The biggest reason to be optimistic about the series’ long-term future — and also what the ball is very much in your court as a viewer — is because of social media. Basically, any network dreams of having a show that’s a self-starter, that will market itself really without a problem. Wynonna Earp is one of those shows that can actually do that without any problem. It trends worldwide on Twitter almost every episode without a custom emoji or any other marketing ploy. It does it solely on the strength of its fans. Every single week, it has an opportunity to use that platform to build new viewers — or, if nothing else, remind Syfy that they will be forced to deal with an extremely angry, unforgiving audience of fans if they ever decide to give the series the heave-ho.

Basically, so long as we see Wynonna Earp trending often and the ratings staying fairly steady year-to-year, it’s really hard to envision this being a show that goes anywhere. Who in their right mind would want to get rid of it? It’s got smart writing, fantastic LGBTQ representation, great action sequences, and it’s just a heck of a lot of fun. There aren’t many other shows out there that give you all of these different elements.
