Gotham season 4 spoilers: Who is the new Scarecrow?

Gotham

There were rumors late last year that a new actor would be taking on the role of Scarecrow on Gotham season 4. Now, it’s official.

Per TVLine, David W. Thompson has been tapped to play the part, replacing Charlie Tahan after his turn earlier in the year and back in season 1. Tahan’s commitment to Ozark led to the switch.

With most shows that are out there, CarterMatt would consider this to be a somewhat-risky move; however, with Gotham this is almost a move that is par for the course. We’ve learned many times over the years now that Gotham has zero issue recasting parts if the situation call for it. After all, this is something that we saw with Poison Ivy on two different occasions, and with Scarecrow it really shouldn’t be all that much of an issue given that Tahan hasn’t appeared all that much. To go along with that, the majority of the time in which you saw him in season 4 you would remember him more for his mask.

If we were to guess, we would say that the vast majority of the screen time we get from Scarecrow is going to be closer to the end of the season. There seem to be several mini-arcs set up within the larger season 4 narrative, one in which Sofia Falcone appears to be the Big Bad. When the series returns on March 1 (see the full teaser here), you are going to see Jerome take center stage. Ivy may surface around the same time, but her story will probably accelerate more after Jerome is gone again. (We never get Cameron Monaghan for more than just a few episodes.)

Meanwhile, it feels like putting Scarecrow at the center of the story closer to the end of the season is a great way to make things go full-circle. After all, this was the villain promoted the most during Comic-Con over the summer. Don’t you want to emphasize him on some level?

Thompson is known for Green Room and a number of other small projects. Gotham is his biggest gig to date, which is something the show is known for – taking chances on lesser known actors that have great talent.
