Grey’s Anatomy season 14: Who hit Dr. Paul Stadler?

Megan Hunt

Who hit Dr. Paul Stadler? This was one of the biggest cliffhangers and questions entering Grey’s Anatomy season 14 on Thursday night.

As the episode started to progress, though, this was a question that we didn’t get a clear answer on — Jo denied that she was responsible. However, at the same time we learned that Jenny didn’t do it, either. We anticipated that this was going to be some sort of huge, dramatic reveal … but it turns out that this was actually not all that salacious at all.

Instead, it turned out that Paul was actually hit by a drunk driver and him being back at the hospital was a mere coincidence and had nothing to do with him being abusive. The announcement almost came out in passing; it was almost so quick that if you blinked, you would have missed it.

Beyond who hit Paul, tonight also did mark the final appearance for him on the show. After all, the character ended up severely damaging his head in the midst of a violent outburst; with that, we’re left now to wonder what the long-term impact is going to be here with Jo.

So in the end, the hit-and-run story when it comes to Paul Stadler was more of a way for Grey’s Anatomy to get its foot in the door than it was anything else. This wasn’t a mystery so much as a jumping-off point. We will give the writers a little bit of credit for the bait-and-switch here.

Ultimately, the thing we’re probably the most shocked about is that Grey’s Anatomy only had Matthew Morrison for a tiny handful of episodes. We hated Paul as a character — we were meant to — but we did think at one point he would be around longer. What was important about this story is that Jo and Jenna managed to figure out how to donate his organs to give others a better life.
