Ice-T wants Law & Order: SVU season 21 renewal to happen

Could we get a Law & Order: SVU season 21 on NBC? It would be a tremendous milestone for the series, and we know that there are certainly many people who want this to happen outside of the entire CarterMatt staff.

You can officially count series star Ice-T in that group. During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon this week, Ice-T (who has been with the series for almost the entirety of the run after joining in season 2) said that the series “keeps on ticking.” He credited the fans for sticking with the series while also notes that he wants to go for the record of season 21.

Technically, SVU has not been renewed for a season 20 just yet, but when you look at the recent ratings you virtually have zero reason to worry about whether or not there is going to be more of the show. So long as SVU keeps most of its current audience and Mariska Hargitay wants to keep going, it’s hard to imagine the show stopping before season 21. As Ice-T notes, that will move the series past Gunsmoke and the original Law & Order for #1 all time in terms of primetime drama series. It’s a tremendous achievement, especially since there are so many other shows out there that come and go after just 10-13 episodes let alone seasons.

Could we dive further in here and project even more of a long-term future for SVU? If we really wanted to, sure — it’s easy to think that a season 22 or 23 could be possible with the conditions we specified above in mind. This series is a little bit different than many others in that its subject matter, rather unfortunately so, never disappears from the spotlight and there is always more material out there. We figure that there is some flexibility in the cast beyond Hargitay, but for the time being we really like the cast as currently assembled. Peter Scanavino and Raul Esparza have brought a lot to the series over the past few seasons since coming on. (We’re excited for Peter to hit his upcoming 100-episode milestone!)
